The Wine:

Te Mata Estate Coleraine is a classic New Zealand Bordeaux red blend wine known for its complexity and elegance. The wine is made using 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 12% Cabernet Franc grapes from the estate’s single vineyard. The grapes are handpicked, fermented in small open-top vats, and then aged in French oak barrels for up to 18 months. The resulting wine has a deep, dark color and an aroma of black currant, blackberry, and vanilla. On the palate, it has a full body with complex flavors of black fruit, tobacco, and spice. It has a long finish and can be cellared for up to 20 years. Te Mata Estate Coleraine is a wine that embodies the elegance and finesse of New Zealand’s finest Bordeaux-style red blends.

‘Superstar’ Coleraine scores 98 points

“Premium New Zealand wine producer, Te Mata Estate, has seen the 2021 vintage of its flagship wine, Coleraine, awarded 98 points by the Wine Advocate – the highest score achieved by any of the wines tasted.”

Erin Larkin, who reviewed a selection of Te Mata wines described the 2021 Coleraine as a ‘superstar’.

‘’It’s the best I recall seeing on release in recent years, a total “pleasure-dome” situation. Tea tree, oyster shell, lavender, black tea and tobacco leaf burst from the glass. Seamless, polished tannins grace the palate. There are notes of creamy red fruits, cassis and bramble, Asian five spice, black cherry and graphite/mineral skein. The persistence of flavour here is extraordinary; it’s detailed and nuanced but insistent in the mouth. The tannins cup the fruit in the mouth. Winemaker Phil Brodie said there are no enzymes or added tannin; it’s all from the vineyard. This is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 2021 was left in barrel a little longer than the 2020 to refine the tannins. I buy this every year, regardless of conditions, and this year I am very smug about that.”

Further Info:

Te Mata Estate is a family-owned wine estate that produces wines from one of the world’s most beautiful and fertile vineyards of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay. This estate is known for producing wines from grapes sourced from its own vineyards located in a selected spot in Hawke’s Bay. This region is protected by the mountains in the western region, and it experiences an excellent maritime climate with low rainfall. Therefore, Te Mata wines are classy, elegant and true representations of the richness of the terroirs.

All the wines are made from grapes grown in the Havelock Hills Vineyard in Hawke’s Bay. This vineyard owns the distinction of being the first legally protected vineyards in the country of New Zealand. The first vines were planted here in 1892. The vineyards are located towards the north-facing slopes. Five sites have been identified here for planting vines. There are various soil types in this vineyard. While the sandy loam soils dominate the eastern part of the vineyard, sandy loam soils with a hint of clay and silica pan dominate the western part of the vineyard.

With its steep but gentle slopes, the Havelock Hills Vineyard is a great place for growing vines in terraces. The grapes that grow here have an excellent balance, power and richness. This place is also home to some of the other beautiful vineyards – Awatea, Elston and Coleraine, owned by the Buck Family Home. The unique terroirs and excellent climatic conditions of Havelock Hills Vineyards are well-protected. Today, it is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in New Zealand, as this place has been under the vine for over 120 years now.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the varietals grown here. The wines produced from the other vineyards are named according to those vineyards where grapes are grown.
