The Wine:

Offley 10-Year-Old Tawny Port has an intense tawny colour with brick-like tones. Its elegant and complex bouquet is characterised by flavours of ripe fruit, marmalade and nuts, along with notes of vanilla and raisins. On the palate, the balance between rich sweetness, vibrant acidity and fine tannins provides the wine with an excellent structure and a delicate yet complex finish.

The ferment was closely monitored to determine the ideal moment to halt the fermentation by fortifying with grape spirit, leaving some of the grapes’ natural sugars. The wines remained in the Douro until the spring following the harvest when they were transported downstream to the historic Offley cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for oxidative ageing in oak barrels. The 10-Year-Old Tawny is a carefully crafted blend of wines between 8 to 15 years of age.

The grapes for the Offley Aged Tawnies are sourced from prime vineyard sites in the Cima Corgo and Baixo Corgo sub-regions of the Douro. The Douro is the largest mountainous vineyard area on earth and vines are planted on steep terraces sloping down to the Douro river, many of which are supported by ancient, UNESCO-world-heritage-protected dry stone walls.

Further Info:

In 1737, William Offley founded his eponymous wine merchant in London and soon began importing Port to the UK. By 1787, Offley was described as ‘one of the most considerable English houses at Porto’. The house became famous for its association with Joseph James Forrester, who came to Porto in 1831 to join his uncle, a partner in what was then Offley, Forrester and Webber. Entrepreneurial, charismatic and pioneering, Forrester took the company from strength to strength and by the 1850s Offley was the third largest exporter of Port.

A scholar and an artist, Forrester was the first person to map the Douro Valley. He researched viticulture extensively, wrote several essays on the Port trade and painted many of the Douro’s stunning landscapes. In recognition of his vast contribution to the Douro, the King of Portugal granted him the Baron of Forrester title in 1855. Tragically, he died in a boating accident on the Douro River in 1861. Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a great friend of Forrester, was also aboard the fateful boat, but miraculously survived as her skirts ballooned and kept her afloat.

Since Offley was acquired by Sogrape in 1996, it has undergone a quality renaissance, moving back up the ranks of Port producers. This quality is derived from carefully sourcing grapes from prime sites in the Cima Corgo, including the high-elevation Quinta do Sairrão at 600 metres above sea level, combined with the winemaking expertise of Luís Sottomayor, who was crowned Fortified Winemaker of the Year at the 2022 International Wine Challenge.

Offley is renowned for its fruit-driven and approachable styles of Port, from the benchmark Ruby Port and quirky Rosé Port, to the Late Bottled Vintage and Vintage Port. The latest vintage declaration is 2018, described by Luís as “one of the best, if not the best, vintage years I have witnessed.” The Offley range of Aged Tawnies is equally impressive and beautifully balances the evolved dried fruit flavours of oxidative ageing in barrel with a refreshing acidity. The Colheita, a Tawny from a single vintage, is also a feat of balance.
